A former manager for singer R. Kelly, who faces criminal charges of his own, is in the middle of plea negotiations, prosecutors revealed at a status conference Friday.
Donnell Russell was indicted in October on one count of interstate stalking for allegedly contacting an anonymous "Jane Doe" victim in R. Kelly's case "with the intent to harass and intimidate" her and her family, according to the indictment filed in the Eastern District of New York.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge in October, court documents show. Russell was also charged by criminal complaint in the Southern District of New York with threatening physical harm by interstate communication and conspiracy to threaten physical harm after Russell allegedly placed a phone call to a Manhattan theater to prevent the December 4, 2018 screening of "Surviving R. Kelly," according to a criminal complaint. He allegedly told the theater there was an armed person inside, prepared to begin shooting, prosecutors said. His attorney in that case, Annalisa Miron, said Russell pleaded not guilty to those charges.
A video of R. Kelly being punched by another inmate in jail shows that not one guard “raised a finger” to help him until the attack was well underway, his lawyers claim in a new court filing.
Kelly, who was being held in Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center on federal sex abuse charges, was assaulted in August by Jeremiah Farmer, who had punched the singer repeatedly to get media attention for himself, CNN reported.
The assault left R Kelly with “significant physical and psychological injuries,” the filing said. His lawyers have not released the video.
R. Kelly has more than $1.5 million in a royalties account with Sony, the singer’s former record label. The question now: Who gets that money?
R. Kelly’s former Near West Side landlord secured a $3.5 million judgment earlier this year against the jailed singer to cover past-due rent. A woman sued the singer last year, alleging sexual abuse, and was awarded $4 million. That woman, who the Chicago Sun-Times is not naming, is one of Kelly’s four alleged victims in his pending criminal case in Cook County.
After the awards were issued in each suit, attorneys for both plaintiffs contacted Sony with a “citation to discover assets,” which revealed Kelly had $1,544,333 in a now-frozen royalties account.
