Magic Johnson Steps Down As Lakers President

Magic Johnson announced Tuesday he is stepping down from his role as the Los Angeles Lakers president of basketball operations.

The Hall of Famer returned to the Lakers in an executive role in February 2017, replacing Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss in the front office.

However, there have been questions about his commitment to the role in the past two years. He has been fined multiple times for tampering.

Meanwhile, the Lakers haven't tangibly improved under his leadership, as they missed the playoffs for the sixth straight season. He signed LeBron James in free agency, but he was unable to surround him with other stars.

Oprah Winfrey Donates $2 Million

Oprah issued a statement where she spoke about donating to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Flamboyants Arts Fund, which gives all the money back to Puerto Rico, where Miranda is from.

Oprah said “I was so moved by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s commitment to bring ‘Hamilton’ to Puerto Rico and support the community that served him growing up that I wanted to join in the revitalization efforts of an island so rich in culture, beauty and heritage. The needs of Puerto Rico and our fellow American citizens following the tragic hurricanes are still very real.”

The aftermath of Hurricane Maria—the storm that hit Puerto Rico hard in 2017, is still widespread. Many citizens are suffering through lack of power, food shortages, and more. Now, a report has surfaced noting Oprah Winfrey has donated 2 million dollars to PR’s Hurricane Relief Fund.

Taylor Swift Makes Generous Donation

Taylor Swift donated $113,000 to an LGBTQ organization called the Tennessee Equality Project (TEP) on Monday, April 8, and did it in classic Swift style — with a handwritten note.

The foundation’s executive director, Chris Sanders, took to Facebook to share news of the 29-year-old “Delicate” songstress’ generous contribution alongside a message of thanks.

“Dear Chris, I’m writing you to say that I’m so inspired by the work you do, specifically in organizing the recent petition of Tennessee faith leaders standing up against the ‘slate of hate’ in our state legislature,” Swift began her letter pictured in the post. “Please convey my heartfelt thanks to them and accept this donation to support the work you and these leaders are doing.”

Sanders captioned the post: “Taylor Swift has been a long-time ally to the LGBTQ community. She sees our struggle in Tennessee and continues to add her voice with so many good people, including religious leaders, who are speaking out for love in the face of fear. Tennessee Equality Project is honored and grateful to reveal Taylor Swift has made a donation of $113,000 to support our efforts at this critical moment.”

Gizmodo Media Group Sold

Gizmodo Media Group is an online media company and blog network operated by Univision Communications in its Fusion Media Group division.

Univision made good on a promise to sell its online properties on Monday when it announced that it has sold Gizmodo Media Group, which includes the family of websites formerly known as Gawker Media.

Univision put most of its online properties on the block last year and enlisted Morgan Stanley to "explore the sale" of the digital asset -- a dramatic departure from the ambitious digital strategy outlined by the company when it acquired the GMG sites nearly three years ago.

Univison, a primarily Spanish-language media company, bought The Onion and its sibling websites in January 2016, ushering in a new effort to reach English-language consumers. Later that year, Univision won the Gawker Media assets, which were rebranded as Gizmodo Media Group, through a bankruptcy auction.
