Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez Pardoned By Trump

As one of his final acts as president of the United States, Donald Trump issued more than 140 pardons and commutations on Tuesday night (Jan. 19). Among those granted clemency were Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez, early Death Row Records backer Michael "Harry-O" Harris and rappers Lil Wayne and Kodak Black, according to the White House.

Perez was granted a full pardon for being involved in a conspiracy to distribute narcotics, the White House said, a conviction that is more than 25 years old. "Since her conviction, Ms. Perez has taken full accountability for her actions and has turned her life around," the White House said in a statement. "She has been gainfully employed and has been an advocate for criminal justice reform in her community."

"I'm grateful to have received a pardon and to have formally closed that chapter of my life in the eyes of the law," Perez said in a statement provided to Billboard. "I have taken full accountability for my mistakes from 25 years ago, but I also take tremendous pride in my personal growth, perseverance and accomplishments since then. This pardon reinforces my lifelong commitment to advocate for criminal justice reform and social justice initiatives."

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is on top of the Hot 100 yet again, becoming the longest-running holiday No. 1 song ever. Earlier this month, she previously tied “The Chipmunk Song,” the only other holiday No. 1, which ran for four weeks beginning in 1958; Taylor Swift’s “willow” knocked Carey down to second last week before her return to the top spot. 

“All I Want for Christmas” first hit No. 1 in 2019, 25 years after its release, thanks largely to a dedicated buying and streaming push from fans. That seems to have been the case this time, too, after Carey’s song broke Spotify’s single-day streaming record on Christmas. Since Billboard forward-dates its charts, “All I Want for Christmas” will be No. 1 on the January 2, 2021 chart, giving Carey the honor of being our first top song of the New Year — an honor she also nabbed last year with the same song. Billboard can confirm the star donated $13,000 (very on brand) to two mothers' GoFundMe pages after reading a Washington Postarticle spotlighting Americans who are behind on rent due to the government's lack of stimulus agreement amid the COVID-19 crisis.

One Nashville-based woman, Nikki Cornwell, is a single mother and shared that she is $5,000 behind on rent, and that she isn't sure her kids will have a Christmas this year. "this has been a horrible year for us," she wrote on her fundraising page, noting that she was supposed to start a job in May, but that was sidetracked when she tested positive for coronavirus. "Its been rough because I'm not the only person looking for work. My family would appreciate any help this holiday. I am definitely praying for miracles. God bless everyone."

Mariah Carey launches her own cookie brand

 Mariah’s Cookies is set to launch on Friday, Dec. 4 online, offering boxes of a dozen or a half-dozen cookies in 30 major American markets.

For the holiday season, the delivery-only brand is selling a Holiday Hits Box, which includes gingerbread, white chocolate cranberry and pumpkin varieties. Other assortments include the Chocolatey Treats Box, the Pumpkin Box and the Gingerbread Box, according to a news release.

Once the yuletide season wraps, Carey plans to offer other varieties. The baked goods will be available to order via delivery apps including Grubhub, DoorDash, Postmates, UberEats and Seamless. 

Mariah Carey’s brother slams new memoir

 

The launch of Mariah Carey’s forthcoming Christmas album has been overshadowed by a family feud that is apparently about to become a legal headache for the singer.

The 50-year-old released her second memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, back in September but the book didn’t sit well with one member of the Carey clan.

Mariah’s brother Morgan has strenuously denied some of the claims she made in the book and said that the singer in his opinion is on the verge of a ‘breakdown.

In the book, Mariah Carey claimed that her brother had accepted money to kill someone but that he never actually went through with the killing.
