Strangest Places Where People Actually Live

When we think of the word “home” we probably all think of the same thing. A typical little house with a few bedrooms. But, for some people, their homes truly defy all understanding of what a home can, and should, be.

The Underwater Pod For Yachts

British studio Gresham Yacht Design has recently introduced the next best thing in yacht design with their Hydrosphere, an underwater viewing platform that fits up to seven people and lowers from underneath the bottom of the vessel in minutes in order to observe passing sea life.

The Hydrosphere can be deployed while the yacht is in motion (in speeds up to two knots), and exterior lighting illuminates the surrounding water, which allows for both day and night use. Also, unlike personal submarines or other submersibles that require a specialist or pilots to drive and deploy, the Hydrosphere operates simply and quickly at the push of a button.

Inside Soho Roc House

Few places in the world scream glamor like the Greek island of Mykonos. With its bougainvillea-draped, whitewashed houses set against the endless deep blue of the Aegean Sea, it is no surprise that it draws more of the international glitterati than anywhere else in Greece. How appropriate, then, that Soho House, the private members’ club of choice for the “it” crowd, has selected this envy-inducing location for its newest club and hotel.

Founded in London in 1995, Soho House started out as a members’ club for people in the film, media, and creative industries. Since then, the group has gradually expanded around the globe and now includes 27 houses, along with a multitude of restaurants, cinemas, workspaces, spas and bedrooms. While every house is individually designed to reflect the city and neighborhood it inhabits, the Soho House properties all share certain common characteristics: from the on-point contemporary design, complete with plush fabrics and bespoke artworks, to the trademark swimming pools and the host of achingly trendy 20- and 30-somethings they attract as members.

The Toilet That Vaporizes Your Poo

The Scion Research team turned to a technology that is fairly well known in large-scale applications (it’s used in mining and also sewage treatment), which they think could work well if innovative methods are used to downsize it. The method is called wet oxidation. Essentially, it works by taking waste and adding oxygen and then putting everything under pressure and gently heating it to about 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

There are 2.5 billion people around the world who don’t have access to safe, affordable sanitation systems. That means every time they go to the bathroom they have to put themselves in an unhealthy or dangerous situation.

So why not just work on innovating infrastructure to help bring running water and sewage treatment facilities to places in the world that don’t have them? The Gates Foundation is working on innovating this as well, Gapes says, “but the fact is that in a lot of communities the infrastructure is so complex and the buildings and people are on top of one another and lack of access makes putting infrastructure in complex and unaffordable.

The challenge for the team is to find a way to create a small household system that contains heat and pressure in a way that is safe to have in a residence. Currently, the team is working on developing a microwave reactor that can quickly heat the unit and its relatively small and they’re also looking at options for using electricity.

South Africa Rated The Most Unhealthiest Place To Live

Countries most people consider to be idyllic, such as Saint Lucia and Barbados, ranked poorly, which comes down to poor diet and lack of exercise.

The ranking is based on 10 measures: healthy life expectancy, blood pressure, blood glucose (diabetes risk), obesity, depression, happiness, alcohol use, tobacco use, inactivity (too little exercise), and government spending on healthcare.

Are Aliens Trying To Communicate With Us?

The unexplained radio bursts were recorded over the course of just three weeks in July 2018, during the telescope's warm up phase. CHIME, the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment, is not yet working at full capacity.

Canada's CHIME telescope has detected 13 new fast radio bursts, or FRBs, including a mysterious "repeater" signal of six bursts from the single source, a galaxy located 1.5 billion light-years from Earth.

Several dozen FRBs have been recorded over the last decade, but CHIME's observations mark just the second time a repeating signal has been documented.

Source

The majority of FRBs identified prior to CHIME's observations featured high frequencies, signals close to 1400 MHz. CHIME can only record signals between 400 MHz and 800 MHz. The new observations suggest FRBs are common at lower frequencies.

"Whatever the source of these radio waves is, it's interesting to see how wide a range of frequencies it can produce," said CHIME scientist Arun Naidu of McGill University. "There are some models where intrinsically the source can't produce anything below a certain frequency."

Though scientists don't yet have an explanation for fast radio bursts, the latest signals reveal significant levels of "scattering" -- details that could help scientists better characterize the nature of the astrophysical environs from which they originate. The scattering details suggest there is something unique about structural characteristics of FRB sources.

The World's Longest Bridge

For a guy like me who is afraid of heights, you may never catch me walking on this bridge. The Europe Bridge spans 494m and hangs up to 85m above a ravine near the town of Zermatt, and has a system in place to prevent swinging.

The bridge for hikers billed as the longest hanging pedestrian bridge in the world has opened in Switzerland. China has built five of the 10 longest suspension bridges in the world, including the Xihoumen bridge. It's a man-made wonder, the world's highest (and maybe even scariest) tunnel-to-tunnel bridge.

Giant Squid Caught

A deep sea monster has surfaced in County Kerry. An extremely rare giant squid, which measures 5.8m (20ft) long, was landed by fishermen off the coast of Dingle on the Coast of Ireland. For the first time in 22 years, a giant squid has turned up in Irish waters. The 5.8-metre (19ft) specimen was hauled up recently by trawl fishermen on the country's southwest coast.
