TDE rapper Jay Rock was arrested on Thursday night (March 13) after police allegedly found a firearm in his vehicle during a traffic stop.
The rapper—born Johnny Reed McKinzie, 39—was taken into custody around 6 p.m. in Nickerson Gardens on charges of trespassing and drinking in public. Reports indicate that Jay Rock attempted to flee when officers did not immediately inform him of the reason for his detention.
During a subsequent search of his vehicle, police allegedly discovered a firearm, leading to an additional charge of felony weapons violation.
As of press time, it remains unclear whether Jay Rock has posted bond or when he is expected to appear in court.
A veteran artist on Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), Jay Rock rose to prominence as a member of the Black Hippy collective, alongside Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul. His track “King’s Dead”, featuring Lamar, Future, and James Blake, was featured on Black Panther: The Album and earned him a Grammy for Best Rap Performance in 2019.
