After Kendrick Lamar was announced as the choice for the Super Bowl Halftime show, many were left wondering why Lil Wayne wasn't chosen to perform in his hometown of New Orleans. Now, Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez is speaking out, and she revealed that Lil Wayne's name was considered.
Perez told The New Orleans Advocate, "I didn’t choose the artist, but I do believe that definitely there was consideration [for Lil Wayne]." However, it was decided "that Kendrick Lamar is the right person for the show at this moment."
Perez also reacted to being told that Lil Wayne said that he wishes that his mom could've seen him perform on the big stage in his hometown. She stated, "Aww. I actually didn’t know he had said that. We love that everybody wants to be on the stage, that we’ve completely changed the conversation to fighting for it versus boycotting. We’ve come a long way."
When it comes to choosing Kendrick, Perez explained, "New Orleans is so rich in culture. We have to take into consideration (that) whoever is going to perform can speak to music culture, regardless of age. It has to nod to real music, regardless of the genre. And Kendrick does that. Kendrick’s richness and culture is really a nod to New Orleans."
