Jay-Z has had an interesting relationship with Lil Wayne and Drake, which has stemmed over the last 20 years.
Initially, Weezy F. Baby considered Jay his idol and biggest inspiration - and almost signed to Def Jam and Rocnation / Roc-a-fella Records (Jay-Z's label) - before Birdman put a stop to it. Jay-Z mentioned this in a 2013 interview on The Breakfast Club with Charlemagne.
However, later on in his career, Wayne would turn to Jay for financial help and Jay would help him with his taxes, along with getting him a deal with the streaming platform Tidal, which was part-owned by Jay, Beyonce, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Usher, Madonna, Daft Punk, Kanye West, and more.
In the meantime, Drake and Hov had a similar relationship. Jay was Drake's idol - they collaborated on Drake's 'Nothing Was the Same' album on the song 'Pound Cake' and on his 'Scorpion' album.
However, when Drake dropped his album 'Honest Nevermind' before Beyonce's 'Renaissance' album - Jay was upset by this - along with being upset and Drake's beef with Meek Mill after dropping 'Back to Back'.
So for revenge, it's speculated that Jay-Z chose Kendrick Lamar to perform at the 2025 NFL Super Bowl Halftime show - as Kendrick famously dropped the #1 hit song that's also a diss song with 'Not Like Us' and damaged Drake in this 20v1 battle between Drake vs. Kendrick, Rick Ross, Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Childish Gambino, Travis Scott (maybe), Playboi Carti (maybe), Lil Yachty (maybe), and more.
Many people thought Lil Wayne should be the performer - Joe Budden and Cam'ron alluded to the fact that Jay dislikes Drake and Birdman, and that's why they didn't chose, Lil Wayne as the performer. Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj went on an explosive rant against Jay-Z - claiming she never got paid her percentage from TIDAL.
In this video, we'll breakdown their entire relationship from 2 decades ago.
