How We Changed Our Neighborhood

Today's lifestyle is changing rapidly even as we speak. The culture today is a completely different breed than what was born in the 80's and 90's. Ghettos in the United States are typically urban neighborhoods perceived as being high in crime and poverty.

Additional causes of deteriorating conditions in ghettos ranged from lack of jobs and extreme poverty to menacing streets and violence. Development of ghettos through modern housing segregation can also be blamed on racism as well as segregation.

A ghetto, is a part of a city in which members of a minority group live, especially as a result of political, social, legal, environmental or economic pressure. Ghettos are often known for being more impoverished than other areas of the city.

Teenagers these days are very disrespectful in many ways. Disrespect is a common part of teenage development, although not all teenagers are rude or disrespectful. It happens partly because your child is developing, expressing and testing independent ideas and values.

Developing drug habits in our community is a growing concern. Social Factors that increase risk for adolescent substance use can include popularity, bullying, peer relationships, and association with gangs. By working together, coalitions can create changes that reduce the social and health consequences of drug use by limiting access to illegal substances.

Breaking and entering is big in smaller rural areas of America. Generally, they're looking for things they can sell for large sums of money. In truth, the majority of home break-ins are the result of opportunity. Most burglars don't want to go to crazy lengths to get into your home. They target easy points of entry, where they are most likely to go unnoticed.

Changes Made by The Wrap Up Magazine

We took it up on ourselves to change our community. The first step was upgrading our headquarters to give off a more visible attraction. Then we installed cameras on every end to give the community more strength.

We then went into the community to help fix and repair small jobs for little or no cost. Up on doing so, we were able to help the elderly and meet face-to-face to the teenagers in the area. From there we were able to gain there respect and learned of the likes and dislikes.

Getting To Business

It's time to plot the change to make my neighborhood better so I can feel safe living here. So we decided to throw a neighborhood block party as a meet and greet to get everyone to engage with each other.

From there we began doing small construction jobs throughout the  City of Lima, Ohio in which we gave jobs to our community teenagers and drug users. "We felt we were doing our part to clean up the streets. Whether we got credit for it or not."

From there, we connected to all the local rappers by giving interviews. From there, we had the community in our corner. "This neighborhood is not a ghetto, we are a community."

These are just things we did to help our community. What have you done to help yours?
