While on ‘The Residency Podcast,’ UGK member Bun B said that Jay-Z was the first to be given a $1,000,000 budget for a rap video.
Bun B noted that videos that came out before “Big Pimpin” were given that amount of money over time. Still, Hov’s video was the first song to be given a million-dollar budget from the beginning.
While speaking about the 1999 music video of which he and Pimp C were a part of, Bun said, “This was the first million-dollar budgeted rap video ever. Now, rap videos had budgets that went over that [and] ended up costing a million dollars, but blocked one million dollars just for this music video.” Bun B gave more insight, saying, “I had never seen anything like it. It was the first rap video I think on ‘Making a Video’ on MTV.”
Bun then noted the success of the video skyrocketed, saying, “It accelerated so quickly, and then within I wanna say three months it was the number one record on the planet.” Watch at the 27:00 mark below!
