Astrology seems to be a more popular topic than ever, as more and more people research what may happen in their futures and learn more about personality traits of their star sign. As The Atlantic noted, astrology never went away, but with the internet, it has become increasingly easier to look up zodiac signs.
For example, the app Stardust is known for tracking women's menstrual cycles, as well as telling the user what's in store for them based on their star sign. Zodiac compatibility has also taken flight in popularity, as people determine whether or not they are compatible with their current (or future) significant others. This interest has also inspired us to look up the signs of celebrities — and their significant others.
This brings us to Beyoncé and Jay-Z. While they may seem like a model couple, fans know it hasn't always been smooth sailing for the superstars. Over their 14 years of marriage, their relationship has clearly experienced ups and downs. While Beyoncé and Jay worked their marriage problems out, their star signs may paint a picture of friction. In short, Beyoncé is a Virgo, a sign known for stability, while Jay-Z is a Sagittarius, known for not liking to stay in one place for too long.
Virgos are known for being methodical perfectionists, according to Allure. It is also said that Virgos are natural problem solvers, and often get along with people due to their willingness to help. This sounds fairly accurate to what we know about Beyonce; in a 2021 Harper's Bazaar essay, Queen Bey admitted that in her 20s, "I was focused on commercial success and number ones and being a visionary no matter how many barriers I had to break through. I was pushed to my limits."
Sagittariuses, meanwhile, are known to break rules and follow their hearts, and they are incredibly good at flirting, according to Cosmopolitan. They also can be extremely philosophical. This could explain why Jay-Z was the one who admitted to cheating and expressed his apology in song. "Look, I apologize, often womanizer," Jay raps in "4:44." "Took me too long for this song, I don't deserve you."
The bond between a Virgo and a Sagittarius can be tricky thanks to the stark contrast in their personalities, but the signs can work really well together if they balance each other out. "Their synastry [a term used to describe compatibility in birth charts] shows this couple has the ability to weather rough patches and come out stronger in the end," intuitive astrologer Rachel Lang told Women's Health. Lang further explains that the two are good at adapting to each other's energy, helping them go through their ups and downs in harmony, and making them the "power couple" they are.
If the qualities of Virgos and Sagittariuses are to be believed, Beyoncé and Jay-Z may have beat the odds to work out as a couple — something Beyoncé may have been aware of since the beginning of their relationship. She sings in her 2003 song "Signs," "I was in love with a Sagittarius/See the emotions he put me through." In 2005, the couple reportedly split due to a rumor that Jay-Z was hooking up with Rihanna, according to Cosmopolitan. Although that was proven to be a fake rumor, two new rumors sprouted in 2013 that Jay-Z was linked with Rita Ora and a Belgian woman named Claudia Scheelan. Jay eventually admitted to cheating, and he and Beyoncé went to counseling to repair their relationship.
"I grew so much from the experience," Jay-Z told The New York Times Style Magazine in 2017. "You know, most people walk away, and like divorce rate is like 50 percent or something 'cause most people can't see themselves. The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone's face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself."
However, after more than 14 years of marriage, the differences may actually help to balance the couple out, as Sagittariuses prefer to explore and show an energetic side while the Virgo is more grounded. While Jay-Z's free and non-conforming personality can sometimes get him into trouble, Beyoncé's attention to detail and focus may help bring him back to the real world.
