Jazz-soul singer Tosha Owens led the slate of winners Sunday night at the 31st Detroit Music Awards, taking three honors across multiple genres.
Owens took outstanding blues artist, rock-pop recording (“Love More, Hate Less” with Bob Mervak) and vocalist in the streaming ceremony, the show’s third year as an online-only event.
In the national field, Alice Cooper took outstanding major label recording for “Detroit Stories,” the Motor City native’s old-school blast of hard rock. Stevie Wonder’s pandemic-lockdown collaboration with Elton John (“Finish Line”) was awarded outstanding national single, while Eminem’s “Tone-Deaf” took the win for major-budget video.
DMA winners are determined through a three-phase submission and voting process that includes voting by area music professionals who are members of the Detroit Music Awards Foundation.
The ceremony was held annually in the spring at the Fillmore Detroit before COVID-19 hit in 2020, and organizers are contemplating sticking with a virtual-only event going forward.
Sunday’s prerecorded event was streamed on the DMAs’ new digital partner, Mandolin, and will be available for viewing through May 24. Viewing tickets are $5, with some proceeds going to Music Saves UA, a humanitarian effort benefiting Ukraine.
