Jay-Z Fighting For Man Serving 20 Years

Jay-Z is taking legal action to help a fan who reached out to him for help after being sentenced to 20 years with an additional 10 years of supervised release for marijuana charges in 2007.

The man, Valon Vailes, reached out to Jay-Z in February, telling him, "This correspondence is a plea to ask for your help with the intent to campaign for my clemency. 13 and a half years is a long time to be still incarcerated over a substance that has become the ultimate green rush."

Vailes was convicted of conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute more than one ton of marijuana, and Jay-Z made two pleas to a North Carolina judge to release Vailes. The first plea was made in August and was dismissed by a judge due to Vailes’ COVID-19 vaccination record, according to Page Six. Jay-Z's attorney Alex Spiro followed up this week by asking the judge for the "compassionate release" of Vailes.

In the filing, Spiro wrote, "Mr. Vailes has exhausted his administrative remedies with the [Federal Bureau of Prisons]; extraordinary and compelling reasons warrant compassionate release in his case; the relevant factors support release; and Mr. Vailes is not a danger to the community."
