Will Smith has signed on as executive producer for a dramatic reboot of his ’90s sitcom, “The Fresh Prince of Bel- Air.” Morgan Cooper will co-write and direct the project, after he created a 2019 trailer for the concept that went viral and caught Smith’s eye.
The show’s reportedly being shopped to streaming outfits. Ever wonder what The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air might look like if it suddenly returned to the airwaves in 2019? Well, given Hollywood’s current penchant for giving everything a “dark” and “gritty” backstory, it would probably look quite a bit like this superbly made fan film by director Morgan Cooper. Simply titled Bel-Air, it gives Will Smith’s young “Will” a considerably more dire origin story while keeping all of the major Fresh Prince beats intact.
A dramatic reboot of 1990s US sitcom The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air is reportedly in the works, with original star Will Smith attached as executive producer. The project will be based on Morgan Cooper's popular viral video that was posted last year and has since gained more than five million views on YouTube.
Two versions of the trailer have been viewed over seven million times and won over Smith himself, who met Cooper last year and praised his "brilliant" idea.
"Morgan did a ridiculous trailer for Bel-Air -- a brilliant idea, the dramatic version of The Fresh Prince for the next generation," Smith said on his YouTube channel at the time.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ran for six seasons from 1990-1996, becoming a global hit. It showcased the acting and comedic talents of Smith, then a young rapper who would go on to become one of Hollywood's biggest movie stars.
