This year’s GLAAD Media Awards will be presenting a special honor to Sean “Jay-Z” Carter for the LGBT message in the song “Smile” from his 4:44 album, which focused on his mother’s struggle with identifying her sexuality.
The awards, which will be held April 12 in Los Angeles and May 5 in NYC, will recognize the Hip Hop mogul’s message about Gloria Carter’s LGBT story with the pro-gay rights organization’s Special Recognition for Song and Music Video for Smile.
The awards nominations were announced this past week at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah by actress Trace Lysette and actor Wilson Cruz.
Meanwhile, TV hits “Will & Grace” and “This Is Us” and movies such as Laday Bird, Call Me by Your Name, and real-life tennis drama Battle of the Sexes are among this year’s nominees.
