An 83-year-old woman who has a decades-long career as an international jewel thief was tossed in a California jail after she was accused of swiping a $22,500 ring. Doris Marie Payne faces felony larceny charges after she was collared on Tuesday for allegedly pocketing the ring during a visit at a Palm Desert jeweler last week.
A documentary titled “The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne,” which was released this year, explores the woman’s claim that she was behind several heists across the globe, including the theft of a 10.5-carat diamond in Monte Carlo. But workers at El Paseo Jewelers said the elderly woman showed no signs of being a crook when she stepped into the store.
