New Memoir Reveals Prince ‘Cheated’ Bassist Out Of Millions

For Mark Brown, the head games began with a cold call from Prince in 1981. And they ended, six years later, with the bassist — rechristened BrownMark, by Prince — confident that the rock star had derailed him out of millions in songwriting royalties.

As related in BrownMark’s new memoir, “My Life in the Purple Kingdom” (University of Minnesota Press), playing with Prince was the best of times and the worst of times — often at the same time. Like when he was cast in the movie musical “Purple Rain.”

“I took drama classes, joined SAG and acted in the movie,” Brown, 58, told The Post. “Then all my scenes were cut. Prince came up with some lame excuse about having to make the movie shorter.”

Before the fast talk and subterfuge, there was that unexpected call. Brown, then 19, took it in the Minneapolis rec center where his funk band rehearsed. “The first thing that went through my mind was that it couldn’t be Prince,” Brown said. “It was surreal.”

What's Your Favorite Prince Song?

Prince was a man bursting with music – a wildly prolific songwriter, a virtuoso on guitars, keyboards and drums. Prince was also a master architect of funk, rock, R&B and pop, even as his music defied genres.

A seven-time Grammy winner, Prince had Top 10 hits such as Little Red Corvette, When Doves Cry, Let’s Go Crazy, Kiss and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World; albums like Dirty Mind, 1999 and Sign O’ the Times were full-length statements.

Elsewhere in his catalogue were songs that addressed social issues and delved into mysticism and science fiction. He made himself a unifier of dualities – racial, sexual, musical, cultural – teasing at them in songs like Controversy and transcending them in his career.

Prince’s music had an immediate and lasting influence: among songwriters concocting come-ons, among producers working on dance grooves, among studio experimenters and stage performers.

Prince put way more work into creating the type of music he like than any other artist I know. "Purple Rain" was chosen as the Wrap-Up Magazine most loved song from Prince. It is the first to feature the billing of his band the Revolution, and is the soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name.

Sony Gets Rights To Prince Music @Sony

Sony Music Entertainment has inked a deal to distribute 35 previously released Prince albums, the label and the late musician’s estate said Wednesday.

Terms of the deal, coming 26 months after Prince’s death, were not disclosed — but sources pegged its value at $20 million to $30 million.

The Sony deal does not include “Purple Rain,” Prince’s best-selling album, or any other soundtrack album.

The estate had signed a $31 million deal with Universal Music Group in February 2017 — but a court voided that deal.

Will Smith To Exec-Produce ‘The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’ Reboot

Will Smith has signed on as executive producer for a dramatic reboot of his ’90s sitcom, “The Fresh Prince of Bel- Air.” Morgan Cooper will co-write and direct the project, after he created a 2019 trailer for the concept that went viral and caught Smith’s eye.

The show’s reportedly being shopped to streaming outfits. Ever wonder what The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air might look like if it suddenly returned to the airwaves in 2019? Well, given Hollywood’s current penchant for giving everything a “dark” and “gritty” backstory, it would probably look quite a bit like this superbly made fan film by director Morgan Cooper. Simply titled Bel-Air, it gives Will Smith’s young “Will” a considerably more dire origin story while keeping all of the major Fresh Prince beats intact.

J. Prince Talks Roc Nation and Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion found herself in controversy with her record label 1501 Records after inking a management deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation last year.

1501 Records simultaneously inked a deal with Houston legend, J. Prince. “Carl is from my hood better known as 5th Ward and I’m proud to be his new partner moving forward,” Prince wrote at the time.

Months later, Meg accused 1501 of not allowing her to drop new music because she requested a negotiation of her contract. She also fired off a $1 million lawsuit and a temporary restraining order, which allowed her to drop all the music we heard since.

Jas Prince Suing Birdman

Birdman is getting called on the carpet by the guy who discovered Drake, and the guy thinks Baby has a M.O. Jas Prince filed new legal docs demanding that Cash Money open the books on the millions of dollars Drake has generated for the label.

Jas is pissed because he’s gotten a grand total of $2 million for his find, even though he was promised a huge chunk of the profits. And there are reports Cash Money has made $40 million from Drake. So Jas — whose dad is J. Prince — wants to shine a light on Birdman’s money practices. Jas isn’t alone — Cash Money has already been sued by Lil Wayne and Young Turk, both of whom think Birdman has been shorting them.

What Happened To Lil Flip?

Texas had a big impact on the music scene in the mid 2000's and Lil Flip was a big part of the movement. Lil’ Flip these days is perhaps most well known for his feud with fellow rapper T.I.

Flip started rapping for Suckafree Records out of Houston, Texas, when he was 18, in 1999. He released his first album, The Leprechaun, the next year. Eventually selling more than 200,000 copies, it featured the hit single “I Can Do Dat.”

The single, “The Way We Ball,” helped propel Lil’ Flip into the national spotlight. The rapper was also able to work with Yung Wun, Ludacris, and Three 6 Mafia that year. This gave him the clout necessary to create U Gotta Feel Me, a double-disc album released in 2004, distributed by Sony Urban Music.

Lil Flip went on to start his own record label, which he named Clover G Records, after Cloverland, Lil’ Flip’s home neighborhood in Houston.

While T.I. was incarcerated for parole violations, Lil’ Flip used the opportunity to object to T.I. calling himself “King of the South.” The heavily publicized feud led to T.I. going to Cloverland, to expose Lil’ Flip as a fraud. When T.I. arrived in the neighborhood with his crew, Lil’ Flip approached him with his respective crew.
