Ford To Hire 11,000 Workers

Ford has announced plans to hire 11,000 workers in the US and Asia in 2014 as part of a global expansion plan. Ford intends to launch 23 new vehicles around the world next year, more than double the number released in 2013.

The company says it will be the fastest expansion in 50 years, and includes the new Lincoln MKC and all-new Transit family of commercial vehicles. About 5,000 workers will be hired in the US and 6,000 in Asia, where Ford is opening two plants in China next year.

The recruitment drive represents an increase of close to 7% of Ford’s total workforce and is the biggest hiring push the firm has made since 2000. Ford’s president of the Americas, John Hinrichs, made the announcement at an event introducing a new research vehicle testing driverless technology.

The Car Vending Machine

It’s finally here, the giant ‘car vending machine’ once was a fantasy is now a reality and it is open for business in China. Ford and Alibaba teamed up to design a massive machine, located in Guangzhou, China, and offers a variety of vehicles for three-day test drives. 

The five-story contraption, which holds 42 vehicles in all, is essentially a Ford-branded garage with rotating platforms, similar in design to parking garages commonly seen in Japanese cities and other countries in Asia.

As a result, the top 10 highest earners of 2019 on Forbes’ annual list of hip-hop’s richest account for a staggering $633,500,000 in combined earnings. And for the first time in his career, Kanye West ($150 million) has outpaced the rest of his competitors to take the top spot — leapfrogging JAY-Z by $69 million.

It was certainly a banner year for West, especially considering he claimed to be $56 million in debt just over three years ago. While earning the top spot is certainly noteworthy, his income jumped dramatically between 2018 and 2019, accounting for a net increase of $122,500,000. Although the entire industry had a great year — with the top 20 acts’ revenue increasing by 33 percent since 2018 — the huge financial increase poses an interesting question: with an album on the way, YEEZY accounting for $1.5 billion in annual sales, and a track record of exploring radical projects, will Kanye West be joining JAY-Z in the billionaire’s club?

Ford announced the development of MAX Motor Dreams, a crib that simulates the motion, engine noise and even street lighting of those nighttime drives, right from the comfort of your own home.

“After many years of talking to mums and dads, we know that the parents of newborns are often desperate for just one good night’s sleep,” said MAX Motor Dreams designer Alejandro Lopes Bravo in a press release. “But while a quick drive in the family car can work wonders in getting baby off to sleep, the poor old parents still have to be awake and alert at the wheel.”

After collaborating with Ford, Filson is back with another partnership, this time, featuring Popeye the Sailor Man graphics on select apparel and merchandise. The capsule is comprised of short-sleeve T-shirts, pullover hoodies, wool caps, pin sets and pint glass sets.

The heavy-duty cotton hoodie is adorned with a portrait of Popeye and his smoke pipe alongside C.C. Filson Co. text on the front and back portions. The wool cap also features an embroidered patch of the scrappy sailor on the crown. Jennifer Lawrence was carrying a Slim Jim and a protein bar in her clutch because of course she was. And that’s about it. 

Except that on Monday, when I was covering the party photos, I mentioned that the Sienna Miller photos were making me laugh because Sienna had that old-school look in her eye – part boredom, part liquor, part famewhore. It just seemed like she regretted partying with her boyfriend Tom Sturridge and she wished she could be a single girl, mixing it up with all the men. Do African American College Students Graduate With More Debt?

The report concluded that HBCU students borrow money at greater rates and amounts than the average college student.  Therefore, it is more difficult for them to repay their student loans post-graduation.  25 percent of HBCU graduates borrowed more than $40,000, four times more than non-HBCU grads.

Cheryl Smith, United Negro College Fund senior VP for public policy and government affairs, said, "Recently, some analysts have questioned whether the student debt crisis is real. For HBCU students, who increasingly are on the hook for financing college costs, the crisis is ever so real."

According to a new study by the United Negro College Fund, students who graduate from historically black colleges and universities do so with far more debt than their counterparts in non-HBCUs.

The study, titled, "Fewer Resources, More Debt: Loan Debt Burdens Students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities," used data from undergraduates who attended four-year public and private HBCUs.
